proclamation · 1865

Governor Sir Charles Henry Darling proclaims (Melbourne, 8 June 1865, under The Amending Land Act 1865, on the advice of J. M. Grant, Commissioner of Crown Lands and Survey) the withdrawal from sale, selection or leasing of allotments in the Ararat, Camperdown, Warrnambool, Belfast, Hamilton, Castlemaine and Omeo agricultural areas. Many are pulled back at the instance of the Mining Board of Ararat / the Mining Department on the ground of the auriferous (gold-bearing) character of the country (incl. the entire Cobaw and Omeo areas); others held for valuation of improvements under s.28. A Gazette Extraordinary marking the selection-vs-goldfields tension under the 1865 Land Act.
